Teacher Strikes On The Cards

After the government in England announced large budget cuts for this coming year, teaching unions and associations have suggested strikes are possible. Many are outraged at the move by the government and have threatened to strike for indefinite durations.

The drop in funding came after a record number of students decided to apply for higher education programs, far more than the goverment predicted. Rather than celebrate the increasing desire of students to stay on a school or college, Labour have announced that there will be a £200m shortfall in funding this year. This will likely put the future of as many as 50,000 young adults in jeopardy, lead to a decrease for school bursaries, and will mean that many will have to look for paid work instead. Given that we are in a time of very low employment levels, this point is something many in the sector are deeply concerned about.

The National Union of Teachers have spoken out and called the cuts “an absolute disgrace”. A ‘lost generation’ is what they think will be the result of this, simular to the situation with school leavers in the 1980′s. “This would not happen in independent or boarding schools and should not happen in the state system” they said. The cut came about as a miscalculated estimate on the percentage of young people who would choice to continue on to colleges, sixth forms or paid training schemes. Institutions have thus been given less money than they had expected to receive (estimated around 4%) and so will probably have to make up the deficit by cutting courses and even teaching jobs. The annual NUT conference in Cardiff saw the first suggestions of strike action when speakers voted to take a stand at the schools and colleges in question

The Schools Secretary, Ed Balls has admitted that schools do face a very real problem currently in terms of providing funding for those who wish to continue education. He claims that the cause for the rise in higher education program applications is down to the poor job market putting people off entering work. He suggests that teenagers are not wanting to enter work at the moment as there are few good job prospects on account of the recession

What Affect Has The Credit Crunch Had On Private Schools

Businesses are not the only things to have been hit by the recent recession. All to be hit is educational institutions, mainly in the private domains. More students are choosing to continue in education due to the lack of jobs currently, but those that are staying on tend to do so in the state system. This is just one of many reasons that we have seen private schools closing left, right and centre, and their are a number of other schools on the edge. Below we take a look at a number of contributing factors to private schools suffering.

Less pupils. Schools survive on their pupils it’s a simple as that. Private school pupils bring in the money via their fees and these go to pay for almost everything in the school, including resources and teachers. As more parents are choosing to send their children to state schools in efforts to cut down on their outgoings, private schools are suffering from large drops in student number and so less money on which to survive

Laying off staff. Due to the fall in student numbers, schools do not have the money to support the number of teachers they once did. Many schools have had to cut their number of teaching jobs in half and this will inevitably lead to a drop in the standard of teaching quality across the board. The knock on effect of this is that there is a reduced divide between the standard offered in state schools and the standard in private schools, meaning more will opt for the free state service. This is something that seems to have affected independent senior schools more than others.

Fierce competition. When markets were growing and everyone was doing pretty well 5 years ago, many weaker private schools and boarding schools could survive simply because there was the supply of students to sustain them. Not that the markets have turned however, lots of these school find they cannot compete with the larger, wealthier schools

You may be dreading leaving your child at a boarding school and you are not alone. parental ties are loosened a little bit all over the country as sons and daughters gain a little bit more independence. Its only natural to be a little worried, after all they may never have been away from home for more than a couple of nights before. What you need to remember however is that your child is probably feeling just as anxious as you are. They will be meeting lots of new and different people and staying somewhere completely alien to them also. Follow these pieces of advise to help everything go smoothly.

Maintain contact. Knowing that they can contact you whenever the need is very reassuring to a child when they are in a new place. Say that you will ring at the same time every evening and keep doing it until they plead you to stop. Children often don’t ask you to ring them and it’s much better for them to get fed up of you than long to hear your voice. Clayesmore school set aside an hour every evening for such phone calls

Send food and gifts. Every now and again, send your son or daughter a nice goody pack. CDs, cloths, sweets…it could be anything. It isn’t even that important what you send to them as it is more about the thought and the reminder you care. They may even make some more friends as they can offer some of their goods to other students. Always ask the school first however as some boarding schools do not allow gift parcels

Visit whenever invited. If there is a sporting event or produced that has been organised by the school you should make every effort to attend. Pocklington School run events that take place on the same day of every month and anyone that wants to come can.
